How to run these demos

What are 'old school demos' ? To read about them and the demoscene, go here.

Running old school demos is not particularly easy today. You have to restart your PC under MS-DOS, and know how to get as much low memory available as possible (the key is to remove useless lines from your autoexec.bat & config.sys files, and move all the drivers you can to high memory with LOADHIGH; a program like MemMaker did that very well in the past). Old school demos often require 580 to 600 Kb of free low memory, and sometimes they ask EMM or himem.sys not to be loaded.

If you have never heard about such things, I advise you to not try running the demos yourself, but find somebody who can help you. In each zipped file there is an info (.nfo) file, telling you the particular needs of the corresponding demo or intro. Don't forget to read it, you will for example learn how the soundcard is detected / selected and why you perhaps can't hear the music (a BLASTER or ULTRASND environment variable must be defined).

I wish you a good luck ! :)
